The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is divided into seven research programs focusing on different areas within cell and molecular biology: computational biology and bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular biology, molecular biophysics, molecular evolution, molecular systems biology, and structural biology. The scientific foundation for what we do lies within biology, but our research overlaps with other fields such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, and physics. In the structural biology program, we study fundamental biological processes from a structural biology perspective. We use X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to determine the structure of proteins, RNA, and biomacromolecular complexes at high resolution. Knowledge of structure allows us to identify structure-function relationships and to formulate and test mechanistic hypotheses using, for example, protein engineering, bioinformatics, and computational methods, as well as various biochemical and biophysical analytical techniques. Examples of research projects within the program include structure-function studies of protein synthesis, antibiotic resistance, metal homeostasis, enzyme catalysis, protein evolution, catalytically active RNA molecules, amyloid, and chaperone-guided assembly of spider silk and other complex structures. The program hosts Uppsala University's cryo-electron microscopy facility for high-resolution structure determination using single particle analysis methodology (Cryo-EM Uppsala). We are currently in a very exciting and expansive phase where we, together with researchers primarily from the Biophysics program, are building an integrated environment for advanced studies of functional structural dynamics.

Job Responsibilities

Development of algorithms for cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography.

Qualifications

PhD in structural biology or a field deemed equivalent by the employer. Postdoctoral experience in analyses within advanced crystallography and modeling of various types of heterogeneities. Solid experience in developing algorithms for cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography, particularly methods for identifying weak signals and improving experimental structure determination, enabling, for example, time-resolved structure studies. Furthermore, experience in the use of AI (artificial intelligence) in method development is required.

About the Position

The position is permanent (a probationary period may apply). The extent is full-time. Start date by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
